Below you’ll find a detailed overview of how our Bluefin Tuna Fishing Experience works and what a typical itinerary looks like. While the three days follow a similar structure, exact schedules may vary depending on the departure port, sea conditions, and fishing activity.

They say early birds catch the worm, and this first day proves it. We start very early to secure the best fishing grounds, especially since this opening day attracts recreational and sport fishing boats from all along the Mediterranean coast. Ports like Alicante and La Línea de la Concepción can be particularly busy, so an early departure gives us a major advantage.
Fishing techniques vary by captain and location. In northern and central ports such as Altea, Alicante, Santa Pola, Torrevieja, and Campoamor, the most common method is brumeo. This technique allows the boat to drift with the currents while two or three lines with live bait are set at different depths. At the same time, anchovies are released into the water to attract Bluefin tuna. While patience is key and the wait can feel long, once the tuna arrive, the experience transforms instantly into pure adrenaline. Some captains prefer anchoring in a strategic spot, while others constantly reposition to follow conditions.
Further south, in areas like Málaga, Marbella, and La Línea de la Concepción, captains often opt for trolling with XXL lures. This highly effective method creates a more dynamic and fast-paced fishing experience.
Expect a navigation time of approximately 1 to 2 hours, heading 12 to 20 miles offshore. All boats are fully equipped with radio and satellite phones to ensure safety and communication at all times.
Day 1 usually wraps up around 4:00 pm if there’s no action, allowing us to return before dark. However, tuna fishing is unpredictable. It’s not uncommon to get a bite just as we’re heading back, sometimes leading to epic multi-hour battles and a late-night return to port.

Based on sea conditions and results from Day 1, we may choose a later start and stay out longer to take advantage of sunset, one of the most productive moments for Bluefin tuna fishing. Throughout all three days, we provide snacks, cold meals, and beverages including water, soft drinks, and beer. In some cases, champagne is brought onboard to celebrate a successful catch, depending on the captain and port.
Day 2 allows us to focus on “hot zones,” areas where tuna activity was spotted the previous day and where bait was heavily released. These zones often show increased fish presence due to scent trails left in the water. The strategy remains similar: locate the area, deploy lines, and wait for the strike. For trolling-focused ports, we’ll retrace paths where tuna were previously seen, adjusting to currents and conditions.
Returns on Day 2 are usually later, often around 9:00 pm.

The third day is often the most productive. By now, fish activity is at its peak thanks to the massive amount of bait released by dozens, sometimes hundreds, of boats in the same area. This increased feeding typically delivers excellent results.
Day 3 also serves as a backup option in case weather conditions affected Days 1 or 2. While it doesn’t guarantee a second chance if you didn’t catch earlier, it adds an extra layer of opportunity to maximize success. Day 3 ends when we hook a tuna—whenever that may be.
CAN YOU KEEP THE TUNA?
Yes. Although we strongly support sustainable fishing practices and promote catch-and-release whenever possible, these three days are the only time of the year when regulations allow keeping Bluefin tuna. When a tuna is landed, it is brought back to port, officially reported, and shared with you, our crew, and their families. Expect to take home approximately 10–15 kg of premium Bluefin tuna meat, widely regarded as the finest tuna in the world.
